A SIMPLE FIRST LESSON

A long downhill is a simple first lesson. Regenerative braking can return energy to the battery. A lower safe speed reduces energy use.

A long paved descent is a simple way to learn how an EV works. The drive motor helps slow the vehicle. It also returns some energy to the battery. A lower speed reduces aerodynamic drag. The energy graph can stay level or go up while the vehicle moves.

We mapped 98 examples across North America with three 2026 EVs. Do not use these roads as a challenge. Use them to see how the road grade and speed change energy use. Apply this lesson when you plan a simple first off-road trip. “Free miles” is the distance where the model shows that the battery stays at or above its starting charge. “EPA-equivalent miles banked” shows the highest energy surplus at the vehicle’s EPA energy rate. These values compare routes. They do not promise range.
